Located, between sea and mountain, between Nice and Menton above the Principality of Monaco, one of the numerous medieval villages of the French Riviera – La Turbie combine a breathtaking panorama of Monaco with one of the oldest archeological monuments – the trophy of August.
What do you know about the roman’s history? Between 16 and 7 BC… don’t worry this won’t be a historical report stodged with numbers and names but you have to know some facts so that you can appreciate the majesty of this monument.
So between 16 and 7 BC there was a military campaign by the Romans, who conquered the
alpine populations. By command of the roman senator the Trophy was built c. 6 BC in honor of the emperor Augustus to celebrate his victory. The stone was originally extracted from the Roman quarry located about 500 meters away and at the beginning of the 20th century and It was partially restored by archaeologists.
