The French Riviera-more than just beach, whine, party and luxury?

What have you already heard about the French Riviera? Or what do you associate with it? A tourism hotspot with its beach paradise and crazy nightlife? The world of the rich and famous with their luxury cars, yachts and hotels? The Formula one and the Festival of Cannes? Or maybe the famous whine selections from the region?
That was it? Haven’t you ever wondered about the historical side of this magical Riviera? Are there some places and pieces left that could you “teleport” in the past?

Located, between sea and mountain, between Nice and Menton above the Principality of Monaco, one of the numerous medieval villages of the French Riviera – La Turbie combine a breathtaking panorama of Monaco with one of the oldest archeological monuments – the trophy of August.

What do you know about the roman’s history? Between 16 and 7 BC… don’t worry this won’t be a historical report stodged with numbers and names but you have to know some facts so that you can appreciate the majesty of this monument.

So between 16 and 7 BC there was a military campaign by the Romans, who conquered the alpine populations. By command of the roman senator the Trophy was built c. 6 BC in honor of the emperor Augustus to celebrate his victory. The stone was originally extracted from the Roman quarry located about 500 meters away and at the beginning of the 20th century and It was partially restored by archaeologists.

Do you want to learn something more about it?

Pack your bags and come to discover a place where you could not only feel the spirit of the past, but also let your imagination run wild.

The 79th edition of the Lemon Festival in Menton

We all know the beneficial properties of lemons and citrus, in general, but few have heard about their international popularity during the Lemon Festival !The celebration takes place yearly during the months of February and March in Menton, France.

Born out of the hoteliers’ desire to enliven the city during the winter, the Lemon Festival has been boosting up the Cote d’Azur tourism ever since 1895. Included in the carnival tradition, the festival runs for three weeks from February, 17th until March, 7th.

During the day, the whole town seems to be holding its breath, but as night falls, a float laden with oranges and lemons appears as if from nowhere, followed by another. The drums beat impatiently, a trumpet tosses a melody into the air. It’s time for the party! Fanfares, orchestras, folk groups and dancers incite disorder, bringing the kind of incandescent splendour normally found in the most extravagant festivals to this parade. Fireworks at the end of the moonlit parades are definitely a must-see.

One of the most amazing citrus exhibition can be seen at Biovès Gardens, where you’ll discover a new way theme each year and altogether a new perspective on carnival culture. The Carnolès Palace Gardens reveal as well a diverse collection of citrus, such as kumquat, grapefruit, tangerine, etc.

The Lemon Festival is indeed a quite unique event in the world, attractting each year more than 230,000 visitors – a constantly increasing attendance. It’s the second biggest event on the Riviera after the Carnival of Nice and before the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco. It uses the services of over 300 professionals and requires 145 tons of citrus fruit.

The Festival coincides each year with two other great events : the International Orchid Festival and Pays Mentonnais crafts fair, both held at Palais de l’Europe. Like the carnival, the evocative and exotic names of these hybrid, botanical, and miniature varieties invite us to take a journey to a far-off land…

In order for you to enjoy as much of this amazing experience, our agency will take care of everything.  We hope to see you here soon !

Pick up from your Hotel to Menton Lemon Exibitions

65€ by person (garden pass included)

“Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!”

This famous traditional slogan, even in English-speaking countries “Le Beaujolais nouveau est arrivé!” (literally, »The new Beaujolais has arrived! »), has recently changed to « It’s Beaujolais Nouveau Time! ». In France it has become a real nationwide social event and a reason for people to have a good time, while in the United States, it is promoted as a drink for Thanksgiving, which falls a week after the wine is released.

But what is Le Beaujolais?

Beaujolais nouveau is a red wine made from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region of France. It is the most popular vin de primeur, fermented for just a few weeks before being released for sale, annually, on the third Thursday of November. This « Beaujolais Nouveau Day » sees heavy marketing, with races to get the first bottles to different markets around the globe.

Beaujolais Nouveau is a purple-pink wine reflecting its youth, bottled only 6-8 weeks after harvest. The method of production means that there is very little tannin, and the wine can be dominated by such fruity ester flavours as banana, fig and pear drop. The wine is recommended to be slightly chilled to 13°C (55°F).

Beaujolais Nouveau is intended for immediate drinking and not for keeping; standard Beaujolais AOC wines are released the following year. The wines show definite variation between vintages, and as such are eagerly waited as a first indicator of the quality of the year’s regional wine harvest.

This year, the first of many thousands of barrels of Beaujolais Nouveau were breached at midnight  to mark the wine’s 60th birthday. While thousands of people cheered as the clock struck midnight in the centre of its production Beaujeu (Rhône), our Japanese friends have celebrated its Tokyo launching  in a more festive manner, and a couple of hours in advance.

This year, like always, the Côte d’Azur Events staff has joined the other party people and celebrated The Beaujolais Nouveau Day, by going to various bars and bistros in the Vieux Nice to get the pulse of this major French event. We have enjoyed this small table wine with a plate of charcuterie and cheese in good company and in a marvelous ambiance. We are inviting you all to join us next year in Nice to have a pleasant chat over a fresh and fruity glass of Beaujolais!

Who said we can’t combine sport with art?

Next weekend, Nice will be once more the host and departure point for the 4th edition of the French Riviera Marathon of Alpes Maritimes, event that gathered up to 11.000 participants in 2011.

The marathon will have as starting point Promenade des Anglais, in Nice, and will end in front of Palais des Festivales, on the Boulevard of the Croisette, in Cannes. The 42.195 km- long route will enable participants to enjoy the sun, the palm trees and the wonderful landscapes of the French Riviera, while passing through 7 different cities : Nice, St. Laurent du Var, Cagnes sur Mer, Villeneuve – Loubet, Antibes, Juan – les – Pins, Vallauris Golfe Juan, Cannes. Around 60.000 spectators will be there to cheer the participants of this 5-star marathon.

If you are going to be here for the marathon, or just to give your support to the ones participating, don’t miss the chance to visit Nice and its surroundings. Place of inspiration for some of the greatest painters of all times – Matisse, Chagall, Renoir, Picasso, Dufy – the Côte d’Azur has also been home for Jean Cocteau, French artist, well-known for his play “The Human Voice”, where he experiments with human needs and realities in communication.

Not to be missed is Villa Santo Sospir, located in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferat, on Côte d’Azur, which was decorated by Jean Cocteau and owed by Mrs. Weisweiller from Paris. Cocteau was quite a frequent visitor, as can be seen from all his “modifications” to the villa.

The “Testament d’Orphee”, the last film made by Cocteau presents many scenes in and outside this villa, where Jean Cocteau used to live and tattoo the walls for 13 years, helped at times by his good friend – Picasso. So, if you’re in the mood for a bit of history and art after a long run, don’t hesitate to drop by our office for more information and how to make the most out of your stay in the South of France.

The G20 will be met with candies this autumn in Cannes

Chosen for its overwhelming natural beauty and world-class, famous Palais des Festivals and Congresses, the city of Cannes will be hosting this November the next G20 summit, transforming the French Riviera into the centre of the world for two days.

The Palais’ triple certification in Quality (ISO 9001), Health-Safety (OHSAS 18001) and Environment (ISO 14001) which attests for its excellent services managed to qualify Cannes as the First European Congress Centre.  Hence, although annually used to be host to international renowned film stars, Cannes will welcome this time the stars of global politics. One of the main assets that also permit a high level of security in the area is the famous boardwalk – La Croisette.

You are probably wondering now what do politics and candies have in common. Well, a lot apparently! At least that’s what artist Laurence Jenkell thinks and wants the whole world to know! Cannes has invited her to exhibit her sculpture-sweets from May, 28th until  November, 5th 2011 on the occasion of the G20 which will take place on the 3rd and 4th November.

Through her 55 giant sculpted sweets in the colours of the G20 nations, the invited countries and the European Union member states, the artist is thus paying a tribute to the populations of the world, regardless of their origins, age or credo.

What is surprising, however, is that at the core of Jenkell’s creations lies the mysterious molecule in double helix form – the DNA. Through intense research and analysis, the creator has been able to convert the sweet into a skeleton of DNA. The sculptures’ uncanny resemblance to the chromosomes contained within the core of the DNA cell brings us to reflect on our own origins and belonging.

So, if you are still around and you haven’t seen the famous Bonbons yet, take a quick ride and get yourself in a picture with your childhood dream! In the end, who doesn’t just love sugary, colourful, amazing candies? I know, I do !
